Job title: Chief Financial Officer

Position summary: The primary duties of this position are to direct and manage the financial functions of the organization, produce GAAP-compliant financial statements and reporting for all stakeholders, and develop and maintain a compliant and responsive financial infrastructure to meet the growing lending and organizational needs. This position will also work closely with, and be a strategic partner to, our CEO to drive strategy, catalyze growth, and further the organization’s mission.
Management/Supervisory Responsibility: This position has management or supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Responsibilities/Outputs:
• Assess and evaluate financial performance of organization with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts.
• Provide insight and recommendations to both short-term and long-term growth plan of organization. • Select and engage consultants, auditors and investors.
• Participate in pivotal decisions as they relate to strategic initiatives and operational models.
• Interact with and bring department into line with Board of Directors’ plans, initiatives and recommendations. • Develop and implement effective Internal Control policies for all accounting and finance operations, ensuring financial practices are in line with the overall goals of the organization and minimizing risk.
• Analyze trends, costs, revenues, cash flows, and other financial data to provide the relevant data necessary for budgetary and financial decisions by the President & CEO and Board leadership.
• Monitor and validate major expenditures of other functional areas by asking strategic and operationally appropriate questions. Assist peers and directors by reviewing and suggesting ways to strengthen recommendations and requested Board actions.
• Direct and manage the general accounting function including accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash management, ledger accounts, journal entries, and payroll processing.
• Prepare and ensure accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, monthly financial statements, projections and cash flow analysis, annual audit deliverables, and annual budgets. • Produce formal GAAP-compliant financial statements for internal and external reporting, audits, and other informational and compliance reporting.
• Implement financial policies to ensure compliance with GAAP, Funder, Investor and Audit agreements. • Manage cash resources to meet operational needs, short and long-term lending requirements, and for maximum interest income on idle funds.
• Develop and refine MIS systems to assure financial transactions are processed quickly, efficiently, accurately, and consistently in a “real-time” operational environment.
Essential Skills/Experience: The successful candidate for this position will have, at minimum, the following skills, experience, and characteristics.
• BSc/BA degree in accounting, finance or business; CPA desired.
• 8-10 years minimum experience in accounting, finance, or similar roles.
• Experience working with nonprofits and boards of directors preferred.
• Microsoft Office (or equivalent) required; advanced skill level with Excel preferred.
• Experience with accounting and loan management software preferred.
• Continued interest in learning and personal development to grow as a leader, to understand the industry and legal requirements, and to help the organization continue growing.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
• Must be professional and able to handle large volumes of confidential and financial information with discretion. • This position works within a professional office environment. Professionalism and discretion are required. • Position will be required to utilize computers, telephones, and conferencing software to interact with various stakeholders. • This position is primarily sedentary, requiring long periods of time looking at a computer, analyzing data, and writing and preparing reports.
• Less than 10% overnight travel; travel within city to support organization’s needs, conduct networking, etc., is expected.
